The state Board of Regents approved the new mission statement for the consolidated Kennesaw State University on Tuesday, completing another step in the ongoing merger with Southern Polytechnic State University.

The consolidation is the fifth and largest consolidation for the University System of Georgia. Pending approval from an accreditation agency, the first class of students would enter the consolidated college in fall 2015.

The new university will retain the Kennesaw State name and be led by current KSU President Dan Papp. SPSU President Lisa Rossbacher was tapped in March to lead Humboldt State University in California. She steps down from SPSU in the summer.
