Morehouse College has chosen Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to address graduating students at its May 18 commencement ceremony.
A Morehouse alumnus, Johnson was sworn in as the fourth Homeland Security secretary in December. He previously served as general counsel for the Defense Department. In that role, he oversaw the legal aspects of many of the nation’s counterterrorism policies and co-authored a report paving the way for repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which required gay members of the military to keep their sexual orientation secret or face discharge.
Johnson also served as general counsel for the Air Force and as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Morehouse is a historically black college based in Atlanta.
