Five highlights from the DeKalb County Board of Education meeting:

A second round of raises is on the books for teachers this year. Since 2007, the district has hired about 2,000 teachers, but has had a hard time retaining them.

• The district hired about 100 new substitute teachers during a substitute teacher job fair at DeKalb County Schools headquarters a week ago.

• The district will now seek standing as a strategic waiver school system status, having previously said it would send a letter of intent to the Georgia Department of Education seeking classification as a charter district.

• The main driveway at Redan High School was renamed for retired administrator Gregory P. Goodwin.

• The board approved an enhancement to the retirement fund, offering up a chance to enter into a 403(b) plan where the district offers matching up to 2 percent of employee contributions.
