Gwinnett to expand career path program

May 28, 2015

Gwinnett County school administrators discussed plans Thursday afternoon to expand its academy program into two more high schools that would allow students to study various career paths.

Berkmar High School will have five career paths when the 2015-16 school year starts in August. They are: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; Media Arts & Communication; Architecture & Construction; Health & Human Services and Free Enterprise & Leadership.

Discovery High School, a new school opening in August, will have four career paths. They are: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; Health & Human Services; Fine Arts & Communication and Business and Entrepreneurship.

School district leaders created the academy program at the start of the 2014-15 school year in an effort to prepare students for careers once they graduate high school. Academies were created in Central Gwinnett, Lanier, Meadowcreek, Shiloh and South Gwinnett high schools. Students learn about various careers in those schools and work on projects in those fields or with local businesses.

Students must still complete Gwinnett’s curriculum in order to earn a high school diploma.
