Google.org will donate $146,000 worth of school equipment and supplies to teachers of students with disabilities across metro Atlanta, officials with the nonprofit announced Wednesday.
Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the eponymous search and advertising giant, will fund all special needs projects posted on crowdfunding website DonorsChoose.org in Fulton, DeKalb, Douglas and Cobb counties — fulfilling requests from than 115 teachers and affecting more than 7,200 students.
The project is part of Google’s philanthropic efforts to “expand opportunity and independence” for people with disabilities, including special education students.
At a surprise school assembly Wednesday, the organization awarded Cascade Elementary kindergarten teacher Sheakita Turner money to purchase a rug for her classroom and an additional $2,500 for other classroom supplies.
The rug will allow Turner’s students, many of whom are in wheelchairs, to leave their wheelchairs to learn and play with other students, according to a press release.
“The Big Comfy Rug project will help ensure the comfort and success of every student in my class,” Turner said in a written statement.
