The Georgia Board of Education moved ahead this week with plans to develop a “Kindergarten Entry Profile,” which will be used to size up a child’s skill level when he or she enters school.
The board OK'd plans Monday to hire a developer for the profile at a yet-to-be determined price. The tool will not be a standardized test, according to state officials, but will be an assessment given the first six weeks of school to determine what kind of instruction a child might need.
"Kindergarten entry is an important time to assess children's skills because it is, in essence, the 'gateway' between the early childhood system and the K-12 educational system," state officials explained in supporting documents.
The profiles are expected to launch statewide in 2017.
