Federal education officials released data Tuesday showing Georgia has made slight improvements in graduation rates, but is still below the national average.

A higher percentage of Georgia students across all races, students with disabilities and those who have difficulty speaking English graduated from high school in 2014 than in 2013. In each category, though, Georgia students were behind the national average.

In 2014, about 72 percent of Georgia students graduated from high school in comparison to the national average of 82 percent. Georgia officials released data last month that showed the state's graduation rate for the class of 2015 rose to 78 percent. Federal education data is sometimes a year behind state data.

Federal officials praised the overall findings, particularly data showing the gap in graduation rates between black and Hispanic students compared to white students in decreasing.

Several organizations released statements Tuesday calling for more to be done to increase the nation’s graduation rate to 90 percent.
