About 14,000 Fulton County Schools employees will get a 3 percent bonus in their December paychecks, the Fulton County School Board decided by unanimous vote Thursday night.

Full-time employees will get at least $500; part-time employees will get at least $250.

The one-time bonuses will be paid for with about $21 million in available money in the projected $210.6 million fund balance for fiscal year 2013, or savings the district has in the bank. The district’s approximate $825 million operating budget will not be increased to fund the payout, said Superintendent Robert Avossa.

Employees who are paid monthly will see their bonus in their Dec. 18 paychecks. Those who are paid bi-weekly will see it in their Dec. 19 paychecks. To be eligible, staffers must have been hired as of Oct. 1 and still be employed at the time of payment.

According to Avossa, the 3 percent bonus translates into $1,173.96 for a first-year teacher with a salary of $39,132. Last year the district paid a one-time bonus of $1,000 to teachers and $500 to all other employees. The last time the district gave raises was 2009.

Avossa praised the board after the meeting for its “stewardship” of the budget to find the funds to give a bonus. “These dollars are not just found. They’re there because of a good, conservative approach to budgeting.”
