Fulton County education officials are gearing up for the new school year, with bus drivers, teachers and other staff focused on preparing schools for students.
Next week, Fulton’s 6,800 teachers will report back to school to ready their classrooms and complete other activities to prepare for the new year. Teachers will receive school-specific training, prepare class rolls and decorate their classrooms. Fulton schools are set to welcome nearly 700 new teachers for the 2014-2015 school year; some 23 schools will get new principals in the coming school year.
Students return to the classroom for the first day of school on Aug. 11.
Also next week, school bus drivers will meet for training sessions, bus readiness checks and test runs of their assigned 2014-2015 bus routes. Routes and bus stops will be finalized by Friday, and mechanics have finished inspections and repairs to be sure the fleet is ready.
Nearly 100 new bus drivers have been hired and trained, and all of the nearly 800 drivers are being certified in CPR, emergency first aid response and defensive driving. Sixty-six new buses, are replacing older vehicles.
The Fulton County School System is the fourth-largest school district in Georgia with a projected 2014-2015 enrollment of approximately 96,300 students – an expected increase of about 1,200 students from the previous school year. The system includes 101 schools – 58 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 17 high schools and seven start-up charter schools.
