Bethune-Cookman University’s football team headed back to Florida around midday Wednesday after an extended stay in Atlanta because of Hurricane Dorian.

The team played a game against Jackson State University on Sunday in Atlanta, but could not initially return because of concerns that the storm would strike the campus.

Clark Atlanta University offered help. It allowed the team to eat in its cafeteria and practice on its football field. Bethune-Cookman's team enjoyed one more meal before departing for Florida, a Clark Atlanta athletics department spokesman said.

“We wanted to make sure we could lend a helping hand,” said Clark Atlanta’s head football coach, Tim Bowens, said in an interview Tuesday.

The hurricane is expected to move northeast Wednesday afternoon and not anticipated to cause as much damage as initially anticipated in Florida.

Sunday’s game, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, was played at Georgia State Stadium. Bethune-Cookman won the game 36-15.
