Two DeKalb County School District students have received top scholarships from the Youth Financial Literacy Foundation.

Kayla McGee, a DeKalb School of the Arts senior, received first place in the competition, where applicants were asked a series of questions and submitted essays on a financial topic. Joshua Brooks, a senior at Arabia Mountain High School, placed third and received a $17,500 scholarship.

The foundation, based out of Farmington Hills, Mich., awarded $400,000 in scholarships to students across the country, including several others from metro Atlanta.

"Our hope is that the research and development to produce the answers and essay will open up the conversation and mindset towards their enhancement of financial knowledge," according to the group's website.
