Sara Dada, a senior at The Center for Advanced Studies Magnet Program at Wheeler High School in Cobb County, has been honored with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The award recognizes young people across the country for outstanding community service activities.

Jennifer Burley, a teacher at Duluth Middle School, has been selected as the 2013 Middle School Science Teacher of the Year. The Georgia Science Teachers Association recognized the Gwinnett teacher at its awards banquet in Macon last week. Burley has taught 7th grade science at the school since 2009. She began her education career in DeKalb County in 2001. Burley holds a bachelor's degree in geology and environmental sciences and policy from Clemson University and a master's degree in science education from Georgia State University. GSTA is a professional organization dedicated to improving science teaching at all levels.

Eleven members of the Druid Hills Middle School Chess Club qualified for the state tournament. At a state qualifier last month, the Chess Dragons won a plus score trophy with 14 points. This is the second year they have qualified for the state meet. Top scores went to Levy Hyatt, Kalonjee Galimore and Nicholas Robisch with three wins each. Other team members are: Marco Aguilar, Ali Desrochers, Michael Ellison, Alia Karbari, Tabish Rayani, James Shirk, Kaleo Simmons and Rachel Widdick. The team is coached by alumni Damir Studen.

Chamblee Middle School students Bennett Hardee, Manav Mathews, Thomas Fennell and Chenthuran Abeyakaran recently qualified for the regional finals in the National History Bee. Chenthuran won six rounds to become the regional champion. Chenthuran is one of 35 students from around the country who will compete in the National History Bee finals in June.
