• Fifteen Carver Health Sciences and Research High School students named to the school's first-quarter principal's honor roll were invited to a special dinner in their honor Dec. 9 sponsored by the Douglas Brothers Foundation. Dr. Marcus Jackson, principal, said, "The students knew they were going to a special dinner; however, they were pleasantly surprised when they realized the sponsor and guest speaker was one of their favorite NFL players." Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Harry Douglas encouraged them to stay in school, and to make the right decisions. Students at the dinner were: Dashia Adams; Gena Corbin; Yuma Danso; Joshua Harris; Nautica Jenkins; Toni McBride; Shantavious Neely; Marlon Portillo; Samira Reese; Jenise Ridley; Alisa Robertson; Angel Robinson; Deshanda Smarr; Brandon Toney and Deion Walker. Jackson and school counselor Keala Edwards Cooper accompanied the students.

• Three teams from the Atlanta area, Fernbank LINKS, Northview High School, and North Cobb Christian School, earned awards at the South's BEST, or Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology, robotics championship at Auburn University Dec. 6-8. BEST Robotics is a national robotics program for middle and high school students that culminates in one of three regional championships, including South's BEST. The Auburn University competition featured the top 56 teams from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Fernbank LINKS, a high school robotics team in Atlanta, received the first-place Founders Award for Creative Design, as well as the second-place SolidWorks CAD Design Award. Northview High School received the second-place Founders Award for Creative Design, and North Cobb Christian School received second place for Most Photogenic Robot.

Cary Waite Sell, an educator at Parkview High School in Gwinnett County, has received the Charles "Coach" Cooper Scholarship awarded by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a PAGE member pursuing an advanced degree in science education. Sell lives in Lawrenceville and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Secondary Science Education at the University of Georgia in Athens. The PAGE Foundation supports PAGE efforts to provide career-long professional learning opportunities for educators, and it also encourages academic excellence through competitive programs such as PAGE STAR, the PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades and the PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon.
