Four Atlanta school employees who district officials say participated in an alleged sickout are facing discipline.

Seventeen of Thomasville Heights Elementary School's 29 teachers were absent the day after Atlanta schools Superintendent Meria Carstarphen announced plans to hire a charter school group to manage the school and require staff to reapply for their jobs.

Carstarphen said Thursday that four staff members were disciplined in connection with the absences. One resigned. Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Latisha Gray did not provide information about staff roles or discipline in response to questions from the AJC.

The alleged sickout was "unconscionable," school board chairman Courtney English said.

“You’re not hurting Dr. Carstarphen,” he said. “You’re hurting the child who is expecting you to be there every single day.”
