A Lilburn man is facing child cruelty and reckless conduct charges after the so-called “date-rape drug” was found in his 2-year-old niece’s system.

AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB reported that Lilburn police were notified by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta after the girl was brought in by ambulance earlier this month with severe burns to her legs and bruising on her back, stomach and chin.

When her uncle, 26-year-old Terrence Darling was questioned, he told police that he called emergency personnel after noticing the girl lethargic and unresponsive, according to WSB.

“He didn’t know what was wrong with her,” Lilburn police Lt. Chris Dusik told WSB. “She was going in and out of consciousness and he set her up on the stovetop and she got burned.”

Darling was initially arrested August 2 on a reckless conduct charge and released later that day on $2,950 bond, Gwinnett County Jail records show.

The Lilburn man was arrested again on Thursday after toxicology results showed GHB in the girl’s system.

“He advised he didn’t know how that came into her system,” Dusik told WSB.

After his second arrest, Darling was charged with cruelty to children and reckless conduct. He was released Friday on $14,150 bond.

WSB reported that five other children, ages three to 12, were removed from the Lilburn apartment and placed in the care of the Division of Family and Children Services. It is unclear what his relationship to the other children is.
