A Lawrenceville man was struck by an SUV and killed Tuesday evening while crossing a busy Gwinnett County road, police said.

The fatal crash occurred just after 10 p.m. at the intersection of Buford Drive and Braves Drive, Gwinnett police said in a tweet.

Investigators said 35-year-old Benjamin Phenix attempted to walk across Buford Drive when he was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. He died of his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the SUV that hit him cooperated with police, authorities said. Police are asking any drivers who may have seen Phenix walking in the area before the crash to contact Gwinnett detectives at 770-513-5300.
