The GBI and the Banks County Sheriff’s Office are searching a wooded area near the intersection of Highway 441 North and I-85 after human remains were found there, authorities said Tuesday afternoon.

The remains were found Monday evening, GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said in an emailed statement. After securing the scene, GBI agents and Banks sheriff’s investigators began an extensive search Tuesday morning that uncovered additional remains and artifacts, she said.

The remains, which were examined by a University of Georgia anthropologist, were determined to be human, Lang said. No other details were immediately available.

Banks County is more than one hour northeast of Atlanta.
