Hall County residents turned in about 190 pounds of unwanted or unused prescription drugs Saturday.

“Operation Pill Drop” is the name of Hall County’s program. It’s a part of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day program that allows residents to drop off prescription drugs, no questions asked, to prevent pill abuse and theft and to encourage the proper disposal of medicines.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Oakwood and Gainesville police departments, Drug Free Coalition of Hall County, and Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County set up five drop-off points across Hall County on Saturday.

The program surpassed the 58 pounds collected in April in a similar event. The DEA plans to continue the program by scheduling an event every six months, an effort the Hall County Sheriff’s Office will continue to support it, according to an emailed statement.
