A Gwinnett County teenager died Tuesday, two days after he was pulled from the bottom of a neighborhood swimming pool.

The boy, identified by the medical examiner’s office as 17-year-old Jabril Ameer Nowlin, was swimming with a group of friends Sunday afternoon before being found at the bottom of the pool, according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County fire department.

Witnesses were unsure how long Jabril was under water, but believe it could have been several minutes, Rutledge said. Bystanders pulled the boy out of the pool and began administering CPR. Jabril was unconscious and unresponsive when emergency responders arrived and began advanced life-saving measures.

The Lanier High School student was transported to the hospital, where he died Tuesday. A letter from the school’s principal, Kerensa Wing, was posted on the Lanier High website.

“We are a very caring school community and the loss of such a young life is difficult to comprehend,” Wing stated. “I know your thoughts and prayers will be with the family and our students as we cope with this loss.”

Grief counselors were at the school Thursday.
