Gwinnett County police have named the man they believe opened fire on one of their own — now they just have to catch him.

Shortly after noon on March 23, Gwinnett County police officers responded to a robbery call at an apartment complex on Sunrise Village Lane near Norcross. One officer made contact with the suspect, who fled into an apartment and jumped out of a window before being confronted again.

That’s when police say the suspect fired “at least one shot” at the police officer. The officer was uninjured, police said, but the suspect — identified Friday as 28-year-old Javon D. Jenkins — successfully fled on foot.

Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said that, as of Friday afternoon, Jenkins had not been detained.

According to an incident report obtained Friday, Jenkins initially told the officer responding to the scene of the robbery that he was the victim and that he had called them. After Jenkins walked into an apartment, police made contact with the true victim — a man who told them that Jenkins had tied him up and robbed him.

Jenkins was already crashing through a window when the officer entered the apartment to which he’d fled.

Anyone with information regarding Jenkins’ whereabouts is asked to call Gwinnett County police detectives at 770-513-5285 or 770-513-5300. Tipsters can also remain anonymous — and be eligible for rewards up to $2,000 — by contacting Crime Stoppers at crimestoppersatlanta.org or 404-577-TIPS.
