A 55-year-old man was killed and his daughter and grandson injured in a single-vehicle wreck Sunday afternoon in north Cherokee County.

Hector Diaz, of Waleska, was driving a 2011 Ford DRW Super Duty pickup southbound on Darby Road when he left the roadway in a curve and struck a tree, causing the truck to roll over and land on its top, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Diaz, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene of the wreck, which happened around noon, the GSP said. Two passengers in the truck, identified as Diaz’s daughter and grandson, were injured in the wreck.

Ashley Nicole Deegan, 28, of Waleska, was flown to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, and Adam Campbell, 9 months, also from Waleska, was transported to the same hospital by ambulance, GSP spokesman Gordy Wright said Sunday afternoon. Their conditions were not known.

The infant was in a car seat and Deegan was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Wright said.

Investigators believe a medical condition may have been a contributing factor in the wreck, Wright said. The wreck remains under investigation.
