Georgia high school holds first school-sanctioned integrated prom

Nearly one year after efforts to end the tradition of racially-segregated proms in a rural south Georgia community made national news last year, Wilcox County High School recently hosted its first school-sanctioned integrated prom, according to WGXA.

In 2013, four friends from the school organized their own integrated prom, the television station reported.

Groups like the NAACP urged school leaders to officially sponsor the 2014 prom, according to 13WMAZ. This year, the school did just that. The school-sponsored prom was held Saturday.

On Twitter, the district praised prom organizers.

"Great job Prom Committee! Great decorations, DJ, and turnout for the Senior Walk! Thank You Community for your support!"
