Rain drenching much of metro Atlanta on Friday should not stick around for the weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The heaviest showers are falling along and north of I-20 for the morning drive, while showers are more scattered to the south. Cooler weather is moving in with the rain, with temperatures in Atlanta only expected to reach the upper 50s Friday.

There will be no dry hours Friday, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

It’s a marked change from the sunshine and 70s from earlier in the week.

“It’s going to be a cooler day, a wetter day,” Monahan said. “It will not last. We’re going to warm right back up in time for your weekend.”

Monahan said rain should stick to neighborhoods north of I-20 throughout the day with a 70% shower chance. Isolated showers will continue in the mountains over the weekend, but metro Atlanta will start to dry out, according to Channel 2.

The northernmost parts of the region could get an inch or more of rainfall by the end of the weekend, while Monahan expects most of metro Atlanta will get a half-inch or less. Rainfall amounts could be slightly higher on the Northside, he said.

“Southside through metro Atlanta should stay pretty dry as we head through the weekend,” he said.

After Friday’s projected high of 58 degrees, Atlanta should reach the low 70s Saturday, according to Channel 2. Sunday’s highs could near 80 degrees.

“We’re not stopping the spring preview,” Monahan said. “We’re just pressing pause on it today.”

With the slick pavement Friday, multiple crashes have been reported before sunrise. None of the crashes have caused longstanding shutdowns, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The Downtown Connector is wet but delay-free at 6:30 a.m., the Traffic Center reported. In Midtown, West Peachtree remains shut down between 11th and 14th streets while crews continue work to remove a malfunctioned crane from a 31-story officer tower.

While the road is expected to remain closed, residents could return and nearby businesses could reopen as early as Friday.

Drivers can use Piedmont Avenue or Peachtree Street to get around the closure, according to the Traffic Center.
