Metro Atlanta could see a few passing flurries Friday, but snow is not expected to stick in the city, according to Channel 2 Action News.

That will not be the case for the northeast Georgia mountains, where up to 3 inches of accumulation is possible in some of the higher elevations. A winter storm warning is in effect for several mountain counties until 7 p.m. Friday.

Before the sun comes up, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said it’s mostly cold rain across North Georgia.

“What do we have falling this morning? Just a cold rain as expected,” he said. “Not the prettiest morning, but for the most part we should avoid winter weather across most of North Georgia — most, but not all.”

The transition to snow in the mountains should happen sometime Friday morning. Once it does, Monahan said snow will fall off and on until about mid-afternoon.

“That snow will accumulate, about 1 to 3 inches over the course of the morning and into the early afternoon hours,” he said. “We could have a tenth-inch of ice in a few spots as well.”

As a result, travel could become tricky in far North Georgia. Things are a little less complicated in the city, where temperatures are expected to reach a high of 43 degrees Friday afternoon.

“A cold rain, maybe a few flurries mixing in, that’s going it be it around metro Atlanta,” Monahan said.

All the rain and snow will begin to clear out by Friday evening, he said, and North Georgia will get a chance to dry out over the weekend. It will still be chilly with afternoon highs in the mid- to upper 40s Saturday and Sunday, according to the latest forecast.

There may not be much snow in metro Atlanta on Friday, but wet roads are posing their own threat to the morning drive. Several crashes have been reported before 6:30 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

In DeKalb County, the ramp from I-20 East to I-285 was shut down after a deadly crash. The ramp reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m., and only minimal delays remain through the area.
