A suspect being pursued by Atlanta police officers was badly hurt early Friday when he fell from the roof of a four-story apartment building on Piedmont Road.

The incident happened shortly before 4 a.m. in the 2000 block of Piedmont Road near I-85.

“Officers initiated a traffic stop to further investigate suspicious activity,” Atlanta police spokesman John Chafeetold The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an email. “During the investigation, the driver of the vehicle fled from officers.”

“Eventually, the subject fled to the rooftop of the apartments at 2115 Piedmont Rd.,” Chafee said. “The subject continued to elude officers and while attempting to escape, he fell from the rooftop.”

Chafee said the man, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries.
