An East Point police lieutenant was forced to open fire Wednesday as a suspect attempted to hit him with a stolen vehicle, authorities said.

East Point police spokesman Lt. Cliff Chandler said a police lieutenant attempted to stop a stolen pickup truck when the 18-year-old driver rammed the police cruiser.

“The lieutenant was actually pinned between the door and the door frame of the car,” Chandler said. “He shot but did not strike the individual.”

The suspect left the scene and soon struck two additional vehicles before fleeing on foot. After a brief foot chase, the suspect was apprehended, Chandler said.

The lieutenant who shot was not injured, but the two drivers who were hit were transported to a hospital for precautionary reasons, Chandler said.

Multiple charges are pending against the 18-year-old, not including a number of charges that stem from his juvenile days, the spokesman said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting, Chandler said.
