Authorities say a Covington man was driving under the influence Thursday night when he ran a red light and collided with a DeKalb County police car, sending the officer to the hospital.

The wreck happened shortly before midnight along Turner Hill Road near The Mall at Stonecrest, DeKalb police said Friday.

The officer, whose name was not released, was driving their marked patrol car south near Covington Highway when a man traveling in the opposite direction ran a red light and made a left turn, striking the police car, DeKalb police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent said.

“The officer was transported to a local hospital and, fortunately, was later released,” Vincent said in an email. The extent of the officer’s injuries was not released.

The other driver, identified as 49-year-old Joe Moore, was arrested at the scene. He was booked into the DeKalb Jail early Friday on charges of DUI-less safe, possession of an open container and running a red light, online jail records show.

Moore remained in jail Friday morning without bond.
