A Snellville police officer and two other people were taken to the hospital after a driver collided with the patrol car as the officer was driving to another serious injury crash Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
The officer is expected to be released from the hospital soon, but the driver is being treated for “some serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” the Snellville Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. The third person injured was released from the hospital soon after admission.
Ga. 124 between Wisteria Drive and Dogwood Road were shut down for more than three hours following the wreck around 2:30 p.m. The investigation, which is being handled by the Georgia State Patrol, revealed that the officer was responding to another wreck with his emergency equipment activated prior to the crash.
Due to heavy traffic in the area, the officer traveled into the center turn lane when a Ford Focus pulled out from a shopping strip in front of the officer, GSP spokeswoman Franka Young said. The officer tried to swerve around the car to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful, Young confirmed.
The driver of the Ford was thrown out of the car due to not wearing a seatbelt, Young said. The driver and officer were transported to Northside Gwinnett Hospital.
A third driver’s vehicle received “minor damages” to the rear when the Ford swiped it during the crash, Young said. The driver asked authorities to be taken to Northside and was released shortly afterward.
