Gilmer County authorities have opened a drop-off location for items donated to residents affected by this week’s flash flooding.

Crystal Paulk-Buchanan, spokeswoman for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, said Saturday that donated goods can be dropped off at Gilmer Fire Station 1 at 325 Howard Simmons Road in East Ellijay.

“The biggest demand is for cleaning supplies such as bleach, mops, brooms, buckets, trash bags, baby wipes and disposable rubber or latex gloves,” Paulk-Buchanan said. “There is also a need for building supplies, including 2x4 studs, sheet rock, insulation, hammers, blue plastic tarps, plywood and leather gloves.”

She said personal hygiene products and bottled water also are needed, but donations of used clothing are not needed.

Paulk-Buchanan said four homes were destroyed and 28 others sustained major damage in Thursday morning’s flooding, which occurred after as much as 6 inches of rain fell during just a few hours.

Another 20 homes sustained minor damage, she said.

Bridges were washed out on White Oak Drive, Holt Road, Henry Evans Road and Evans Road, Paulk-Buchanan said.
