Gov. Nathan Deal will announce Monday whether he will suspend members of the DeKalb County school board.
Deal’s office said he will hold an 11 a.m. news conference with members of the DeKalb legislative delegation to respond to the state Board of Education’s recommendation that six members of the school board be removed.
Deal said in a statement that he will scrutinize the decision over the weekend.
“Removing elected officials from office is a serious duty, not undertaken lightly. That responsibility, however, pales in comparison to the importance of assuring the credibility of students’ education,” he said.
“I will do everything in my power to prevent the loss of accreditation of the DeKalb school system and the devastating impact it would have on students and economic development in one of the state’s largest counties.”
The Georgia Board of Education voted unanimously after a 14-hour hearing Thursday to suspend six of the nine DeKalb board members.
The school district, the state’s third-largest, is at risk of losing accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which in December issued a 20-page report that documented threatening and abusive behavior by board members, nepotism and questionable financial decisions.
