North Georgia will get in a few dry hours Tuesday before the return of rain this afternoon.
Like on Monday, showers will begin firing up in parts of the region at lunchtime, and become more widespread in mid- to late afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Unlike the past few days, however, temperatures are not expected to leave the 50s Tuesday.
Monahan said it will be “a week of changes” for North Georgia weather, culminating with the chance for lows in the 20s on Sunday morning.
“Pretty much all the way through the weekend, every day is going to have something different lined up for us,” he said.
Monahan is expecting most of the region to stay dry through midday. Atlanta is off to a chilly start with temperatures in the 40s for the first time since early last week. While that’s on target for lows this time of year, a projected high of 59 degrees is five degrees below average.
“Its going to get cloudy as the day goes on, but we’ll start out with a few hours of sunshine this morning,” Monahan said. “Wednesday is going to be a pretty cloudy day, and by Thursday, we’ll work into a bit more sunshine.
“It is not going to be as bright and sunny and warm as it’s been over the first few days of March,” he said.
Until the rain arrives, he expects no issues on metro Atlanta roads other than some lingering moisture from Monday’s storms. Rain is possible in west Georgia by around lunchtime, and widespread showers are likely by midafternoon for Atlanta and neighborhoods to the north, according to Monahan.
“We’ re going to have some slowdowns on the roads headed home from work later today, and into this evening as well as some heavier rain moves into North Georgia,” he said.
Showers could continue into late Tuesday night, he said, and there could be some areas of wet weather Wednesday morning as another cold front sweeps through North Georgia. There is a chance for an isolated strong storm tomorrow, but it is slight, Monahan said.
Wednesday should turn drier as the day goes on, but rain is in the forecast Thursday, Friday and Saturday, according to Channel 2. Friday will also see a higher chance of severe weather, Monahan said.

While traffic could slow in the rain this afternoon, there are no major delays on metro Atlanta interstates Tuesday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. The morning commute is off to a smooth start with no longstanding crashes or closures at 6:30 a.m.
Wait times at security checkpoints are also looking good at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The wait was less than 10 minutes at all checkpoints, including international, before daybreak Tuesday.
