A Hall County woman is giving her side of a gunfire exchange last week that left her, her child and a deputy injured, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“I’m lucky to be alive, thank God,” Jennifer Harris said.

She thinks deputies thought the car that she and others were in belonged to the people that just robbed her, the television station reported.

Just before midnight last Thursday, Harris’ fiance reported a home invasion at their residence on Campbell Road, officials said.

Her fiance grabbed two of the children, headed for the woods to protect them and called 911, the station reported.

Harris, then without a phone, got everyone else into a car and drove away to get help, Channel 2 reported. Deputies responding to the call didn’t know there were three children and four adults in the car.

Gunfire was exchanged, Hall County officials said in an earlier release.

A deputy was hit in the torso and also received a minor head wound, officials said. The deputy’s ballistic vest stopped the bullet to the torso area. He was treated and released.

Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch released a statement to Channel 2 on the incident.

“I can assure everyone that once the GBI has completed the investigation, it will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for a full review,” Couch said. “And when it is legally appropriate, full details will be available.”

Now, Harris and her fiance said that the Division of Family and Children Services won’t let them see their kids, Channel 2 reported.

“I still have nightmares,” she said. “(The) kids still have nightmares.”
