A pedestrian was hit and killed Wednesday morning by a car on I-85 after he tried to escape officers, College Park’s police chief said.

About 7 a.m., police tried to stop a man they knew was wanted out of College Park, Chief Keith Meadows said. The attempted stop was at the overpass of Old National Highway and I-85.

The man saw officers and ran down the entrance ramp and across I-85, Meadows said.

The man was hit “by a passing motorist,” Meadows said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as 37-year-old Anton Mitchell. Other details were not available.

The GBI and the Georgia State Patrol were asked to investigate the incident, Meadows said, which is normal protocol.
