The man who was fatally shot during a confrontation with deputies in Middle Georgia on Monday has been identified.
Jeffrey Scott Cantrell, 46, died at the scene on Grandview Road in Jasper County, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Tuesday in a news release.
After a woman walking on the road told deputies a man pointed a gun at her, deputies heard gunshots coming from a residence, according to the release.
Once at the house, deputies made contact with Cantrell, who “made statements to the officers that they would have to kill him,” the GBI said.
At some point, the deputies exchanged gunfire with Cantrell, the GBI said. The man died at the scene.
No deputies were injured.
The GBI is investigating, which is routine in use-of-force cases.
Jasper County is about 60 miles southeast of Atlanta.
