A Sandy Springs judge who made controversial comments at an Iranian-American’s sentencing has asked not to be reappointed, a city spokeswoman confirmed Monday.
Municipal Court Judge Sharon Dickson was accused of anti-Islamic bias in the 2017 sentencing of a nursing student.
According to court transcripts, Dickson referenced Fazial Azizan’s heritage multiple times, questioned his respect for women and called him “despicable.”
The city altered the judge’s five-month sentence in July.
Azizan was on trial for misdemeanor disorderly conduct after a crash in his Uber car, according to Channel 2 Action News. A customer was in the back seat at the time of the accident near the intersection of Hammond and Glenridge drives.
He was convicted in a bench trial in which he represented himself.
After appeals, Municipal Court Chief Judge Donald Schaefer sentenced Azizan to time served and two months of probation.
"We are relieved that justice was done in this case," said attorney Jason McLendon, whose law firm represented Azizan during his appeal.
The City Council approves judicial choices Tuesday, according to Channel 2.
