A Newton County deputy had to be flown to a hospital after she was assaulted by a woman who had attempted to commit suicide, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputy Moedjirah Vandelisle answered the call for assistance Saturday at around 7:20 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of Five Oaks Drive in Covington.
At that point, Karen Lynn Anders assaulted Vandelisle, inflicting injuries that required immediate medical attention, according to a sheriff’s office spokesman.
Channel 2 Action News reported that Anders attacked Vandelisle with a glass bottle.
A helicopter flew Vandelisle to Atlanta Medical Center. She has since been released and is recovering at home.
Investigators told Channel 2 that Anders attacked another deputy who arrived as backup. She was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and felony obstruction, authorities said.
Deputies refrained from using fatal force against Anders because of her unstable mental health, according to Channel 2.
