A DeKalb County Zaxby’s employee may have been involved in a reported shootout during the Wednesday lunch rush, police said.

No one was wounded, but witnesses told Channel 2 Action News they heard multiple gunshots. Several shell casings were later recovered, DeKalb police spokesman Maj. Stephen Fore said.

The shootout happened in the parking lot between the Zaxby’s and a Pizza Hut, Fore said.

Michelle Roderges told the television station she and her cousin ducked behind a U-Haul when gunfire erupted.

“I heard about nine or 10 shots while we were sitting there,” Roderges said.

The fast food chains are located near Redan and South Hairston roads.

“From what witnesses say, there was somebody from Zaxby's and another guy involved in the shooting,” Capt. D.L. Jordan told Channel 2. “A shootout did happen. We're just trying to put all the pieces together right now.”

Police didn’t allow anyone to enter or leave the Zaxby’s for several hours after the incident, Channel 2 reported.

“That would probably have been the most comfortable place for witnesses until they could be interviewed by detectives,” Fore said.

The investigation is ongoing.
