A mother was arrested after Clayton County police said she left her 2-year-old son home alone while she was away and then pulled a gun on an apartment complex employee who had been looking after the boy.
Francesca Nilsestuen faces several charges, including cruelty to children, in connection with the May 17 incident, Clayton police said in a statement.
Officers were sent to the apartment complex off Southlake Parkway after a 911 caller reported a disturbance, police said in a news release.
The caller, who police later determined was an employee, told a dispatcher they had found a 2-year-old wandering around the complex alone. They went on to say they had the child with them for an hour and even had to change the boy’s diaper.
The child’s mother, Nilsestuen, had left to get food with her live-in boyfriend, police determined during an investigation. While she was gone, she left the 2-year-old home alone, police said.
At some point, the boy got out of the apartment and began walking around until he was picked up by complex personnel.
When Nilsestuen got back to the complex, she went to the front office and tried to pick up her child, police said. However, the employees weren’t comfortable releasing the boy until officers were on the scene.
According to police, Nilsestuen then hit one of the employees in the face.
The employee picked up the boy and ran into an office, locking them both inside. Nilsestuen beat and kicked the office door, but was not able to get in, police said.
The mother then went to her car, pulled out a gun and tried to break the glass windows of the office, police said. Her boyfriend disarmed her, but Nilsestuen managed to bust out two windows and get into the office, police confirmed.
Investigators said Nilsestuen “damaged more property once she entered,” and then left with her son.
Nilsestuen was taken into custody shortly after. She was first transported to a hospital to treat injuries she received while breaking through the window, then was arrested and taken to the Clayton County Jail.
In addition to child cruelty, Nilsestuen is charged with deprivation of a minor, criminal damage, simple battery and reckless conduct. The child was placed into the care of the Division of Family and Children Services.
