A Conyers daycare worker accused of leaving a 5-year-old child unattended in a van has been charged with cruelty to children in the second degree, police said Friday.
Catherine Brown, 51, of Covington, was employed by Eyes on Your Child Daycare to drive their van, pick up children from school and bring them to the daycare facility on Irwin Bridge Road, according to a statement from the Conyers Police Department, which learned of the incident Monday from the Division of Family and Children Services.
On Sept. 9, Brown picked up the 5-year-old child, who fell asleep on the ride from school to the daycare facility, police said.
“The suspect failed to check the van upon arriving at Eyes on Your Child, and the victim was left unattended in the closed van with the engine off until the victim’s mother came to pick him up,” according to the statement.
Officials estimate the child was left in the van between 20 and 40 minutes, police said.
Authorities issued arrest warrants for Brown, who surrendered Thursday at the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, Conyers police said.
In addition to cruelty to children, Brown was charged with deprivation of a minor and reckless conduct. With the exception of the reckless conduct charge, all other charges are felonies.
