Christopher Sean Abram, 35, of Macon, faces 17 counts related to the theft of a Clayton County Police Department patrol car and the ensuing chase.

A Clayton County man was arrested early Thursday morning and now faces a slew of charges after police said he took a patrol car from the scene of a traffic accident and led police on a brief pursuit before crashing.

Christopher Sean Abram, 35, of Macon, faces 17 counts related to the theft of a Clayton County Police Department patrol car and the ensuing chase, according to authorities. Among the counts are charges of theft by taking, fleeing police officers, reckless driving and an open container violation, online jail records show. Abram was booked into the Clayton County Jail about 5 a.m. and remains there without bond.

The incident began when officers responded to a call for an overturned vehicle on Tara Boulevard near Poston Road, department spokeswoman Sgt. Julia Isaac said. Abram, who had been driving the overturned vehicle, approached the responding officers and asked for a ride, Isaac said.

The officer speaking with Abram asked if he was injured, but he refused to answer. As the officer continued speaking with him and other witnesses, Abram began to walk away toward the officer’s car, Isaac said.

Officers and sheriff’s deputies assisting with the accident told Abram to stop, but he quickly entered the patrol car and drove away, Isaac said. Other officers and deputies followed the patrol car, which Abram ran off the road, flattening all four of the car’s tires and slowing his speed. The man eventually pulled over and was taken into custody.

No civilians or officers were injured in the incident, Isaac said.
