Clayton County firefighters are mourning the death of a colleague after a weekend crash in Virginia.

Jordan Bolden, 22, was killed Saturday after a vehicle he was in went off the road, striking a guardrail and flipping onto its roof, according to Virginia State Police. Bolden was a passenger in the car.

The crash took place about 3:30 a.m. in Newport News, which is in southeastern Virginia. The vehicle’s driver, 21-year-old Denzel Antonio Carter, was traveling west on I-64 near J. Clyde Morris Boulevard when the car drifted off the road for an unknown reason, police said.

Carter, who was charged with reckless driving, and a woman were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Bolden was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a Facebook post, Clayton County fire Chief Landry Merkison asked the community to pray for Bolden’s family. He joined the department in 2019.

“Lift them up and our crews who worked side by side with Firefighter Bolden as we prepare to say goodbye to one of our bright, rising stars,” the post said.
