The man accused of carjacking a woman at a Paulding County gas station is in custody after eluding police for more than a week.
Zachary Ryan Shipp, of Powder Springs, was arrested by Atlanta police late Wednesday and booked into the Fulton County jail, according to police. From there, Shipp is expected to be moved to jails in other metro counties, where he is also facing charges.
Shipp, currently out on bond for an involuntary manslaughter charge in Douglas County, is also wanted in Cobb and DeKalb counties, in addition to the charges in Paulding County, Cpl. Ashley Henson with the Paulding Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
On Aug. 8, Shipp allegedly carjacked a woman at gunpoint at the Racetrac gas station in Hiram, according to police. The woman was able to identify the heavily-tattooed Shipp after being shown a picture, and a store clerk verified it was the man responsible, police said. After being identified as the suspect, Shipp eluded capture but was tracked to Atlanta with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, Henson said.
Atlanta police charged Shipp with felony theft by taking, obstruction, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony, reckless conduct and improper lane change, Henson said. Charges are pending in Paulding.
In February, a Douglas County grand jury indicted Shipp on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct for his alleged role in an overdose death, according to the county’s District Attorney’s Office. Shipp’s trial in that case is tentatively scheduled for September, an assistant DA said Thursday.
