An hourslong manhunt for a Brookhaven man accused of firing shots inside his apartment came to a peaceful end Saturday afternoon when the suspect was arrested at a friend’s home, authorities said.

Brookhaven police asked some residents to stay indoors for much of the day as officers spent seven hours searching for the 24-year-old, who they said was armed with a pistol.

The search began about 7:15 a.m. after officers responded to a report of an armed man at the Sierra Gardens Apartments along Buford Highway, Brookhaven police spokesman Lt. David Snively told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police said the man threatened suicide and fired at least one round inside his apartment, which went through the floor. When police arrived, he fled into some woods behind the complex and later fired at least two more rounds, Snively said.

Multiple agencies assisted in the search, including Chamblee, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs police. Officers formed a perimeter around the area and urged nearby residents to stay inside as members of the North Metro SWAT Team looked for the armed man near Buford Highway and Clairmont Road.

“A very heavy police presence is expected in the area until this person is located,” Snively said Saturday morning, calling it a “dangerous situation.”

Residents near Buford Highway and Clairmont Road were urged to stay inside and not open the door for anyone they didn’t know.

The search came to an end shortly after 2 p.m. when the man was located at a friend’s home in the Esquire Apartments on Buford Highway and taken into custody, Snively said.

“During the apprehension, he did not fire a gun and none of our officers fired their weapons,” Snively said, calling it “an ideal outcome” to the hourslong search.

It’s unclear if the gun was recovered, but police said they’ve obtained a search warrant for the apartment. The suspect’s name has not been released and it’s unclear what charges he could face.

Snively said there is no longer a danger to the public, and that residents who remained inside could go about their weekends.
