An 89-year-old woman said a neighbor she trusted stole nearly $40,000 from her, Channel 2 Action News reported.
“I’m sick about it. I will tell you how I feel about it,” Everlina Jackson told the news station.
Jackson said she had gotten so close to her neighbor that she considered him her godson. That changed after she began to suspect that he was transferring money out of her bank account and into one of his own, she told Channel 2.
“I thought he was helping me,” she said.
Jackson’s daughter, Notosha Wilson, said the man gained her mother’s trust by doing errands for her. He even convinced her to give him power of attorney, she said.
Wilson said she realized something was wrong when they stopped receiving mail from her mother’s bank. Those letters were rerouted to a beauty salon in Roswell, she said.
Then Wilson checked Jackson’s bank account and noticed $38,000 was missing. She said $120,000 more is missing from her late father’s credit union account.
Several online bank transfers totaling thousands of dollars were made in the neighbor’s name, Jackson told Channel 2.
She said she didn’t initiate the transfers. “I don’t do internet stuff,” she told the news station.
Atlanta police are investigating the incident, according to Channel 2. A police report identifies the neighbor as a suspect, the news station reported.
Jackson said the man has removed himself as power of attorney and returned about $10,000, according to Channel 2.
