A Snellville police officer is recovering after being injured in an on-duty motorcycle wreck with a car Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash happened at the intersection of Scenic Highway and Oak Road before 4:30 p.m., the department said.

Officer Russ Mayfield was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. On Tuesday evening, the department posted a photo of him smiling in his hospital bed while wearing his motorcycle helmet and giving a thumbs up.

“Officer Mayfield is in good spirits at the hospital,” the post read. “Motor cops are tough!”

He was released from the hospital the same evening with his leg in a brace. Mayfield may not be able to get back on a motorcycle for some time while his leg is immobilized, the police department said on Facebook.

Multiple lanes were shut down during the evening commute as officers investigated the wreck. It’s unclear if any charges will be filed as a result of the crash.
