Gwinnett police are investigating a fatal wreck that happened Saturday during a police chase near Duluth.

Jeremy Kelly, 28, of Flowery Branch was killed when he crashed on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at Peachtree Crest Drive while being pursued by Duluth police, Gwinnett police spokesman Edwin Ritter said Tuesday.

According to police, a Duluth officer stopped Kelly for a traffic violation near Shorty Howell Park on Pleasant Hill Road. Kelly sped off in his 1995 Nissan Maxima, pursed by a marked Duluth patrol car, Ritter said.

Kelly was driving recklessly at extremely high rates of speed, police said. Around 3:15 p.m, while being pursued, Kelly crashed head on into a car driven by Dawn Smith, 49, of Duluth, police said.

Another driver, Jose Montes, 21, of Norcross, also was struck. Smith and Montes were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Kelly died at the scene, Ritter said.

The Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.

The pursuit and crash were captured on dash cam video, but the video was not being released as of Tuesday, Ritter said.
