Accumulating snow is possible across the northeast Georgia mountains Thursday night, but metro Atlanta should see only a cold rain, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service late Thursday morning issued a winter weather advisory calling for as much as 3 inches of snow in some areas.

The advisory, in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday through 10 a.m. Friday north of a line from Chatsworth to Jasper to Dawsonville to Helen, predicts 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulations, with 2 to 3 inches at elevations above 2,500 feet.

The snow could cause travel problems in the northeast corner of the state, forecasters warned.

The Weather Service said portions of east Georgia outside of the mountains could also see a mixture of precipitation overnight.

While Thursday's morning commut was dry, rain was expected to move into metro Atlanta during the afternoon.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said there's a 100 percent chance of rain Thursday, diminishing to 50 percent Friday.

Afternoon highs Thursday will be in the low 40s, followed by overnight lows in the mid-30s, Minton said. Friday's highs will be about 10 degrees warmer, topping out in the low 50s.

A big warm-up is forecast for the weekend, Minton said.

Saturday will be sunny, with highs around 70 degrees after a chilly start with morning temperatures in the low 40s.

Sunday will be mostly sunny, with lows in the upper 40s and highs in the upper 60s.
