The U.S. Capitol was placed on lockdown after shots were fired outside Thursday afternoon, the Washington Post reported.

There are reports that a Capitol police officer was injured, according to the Associated Press.

The incident appeared to start around 2:20 p.m.

CNN reported that an order was given over the Capitol speaker system to shelter in place because of an active shooter situation.

Officers with semi-automatic weapons were seen running for the exits on the first floor of the House side of the Capitol, the Post said.

The Senate was on the floor and remained open, but police were in the hallways, reports said.
