Four teenagers were seriously injured Wednesday when the stolen car they were driving wrecked outside a church in Lilburn, police said.
The teens, who range in age from 15 to 17, were all taken to a hospital after the car smashed into a utility pole, according to a Gwinnett County police report.
The teens were in a red 2015 Ford Focus, the report said. It had been reported stolen from a location on Jodeco Road about 6 a.m., according to Lilburn police spokesman Scott Bennett.
According to Bennett, the driver saw a Lilburn officer driving in the opposite direction and sped off.
The 17-year-old driver headed down Burns Road, the police report said. When he arrived at a curve in the road northwest of Garner Way, the teen lost control of the car, the report said.
The car left the road and crashed into the pole near the 4000 block of Burns Road about 10:30 a.m.
One person was trapped in the car and had to be extricated, Gwinnett fire department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
The teens were still in the hospital Thursday morning. It’s not clear if they have been charged.
Speed is being investigated as a factor in the wreck.
