No bond for Stone Mountain uncle accused in 2-year-old’s death

A judge denied bond Wednesday for the Stone Mountain man accused of shooting and killing his 2-year-old nephew.

Detray Shivers, 25, told police he returned to the Third Street home from work the morning of Sept. 8 and found the boy, Kamarri Lewis, dead. The boy’s aunt, Alexia Thomas, 23, said she was supposed to be watching Kamarri, but fell asleep, according to police.

Both Shivers and Thomas were arrested in the hours after the boy’s death and charged with child cruelty, reckless conduct and cocaine possession, police said. Shivers was charged with tampering with evidence.

Investigators initially said Kamarri may have shot himself. But an autopsy determined the gunshot was not self-inflicted, and charges were upgraded against Shivers. On Sept. 11, Shivers was charged with homicide, police said.

Thomas was later released form the DeKalb jail after posting $45,000 bond. Shivers remains jailed until his next court appearance, which has not yet been scheduled.
